Introduction

Postgraduate Research degrees (Ph.D.) are the highest level of university education. The Ph.D. program in Computing Science and Engineering offered by the Sapienza University of Rome is aimed at the acquisition of the necessary competence to pursue highly-specialised research activities and concludes with the preparation of a final thesis.

The Ph.D. Program, which may include a period of study abroad, lasts three academic years. Each academic year begins on November 1 and ends on October 31 of the following year.  In exceptional cases, the course may be extended by a further academic year at the discretion of the Board of Lecturers.

The Doctorate course envisions:

* Participation in Doctorate schools and courses of the Master in Computer Engineering, and the passing of the corresponding exams.

* A research project under the supervision of a Tutor designated by the Board of Lecturers.

* The preparation of a Doctorate Thesis covering the original scientific results attained by the student during the Doctorate course.

* A final discussion of the Doctorate Thesis in order to achieve the title of Doctor of Research (Ph.D.) in Computing Science and Engineering (Dottorato in Ingegneria Informatica).

To gain entry to a Doctorate of research course, students must possess a Master's degree in a related field or a suitable certificate for studies carried out abroad.  The selection of candidates for the Doctorate Course is done by public competition, as described in the relevant announcement published once a year in the Gazzetta Ufficiale della Repubblica Italiana

An International Call for PhD Applications is issued on a year base. The Call for Applications is usually in June, the deadline for sending the application is in the third decade of July, the selection takes place in late september and the selected candidates are expected to start the PhD program on November 1st.  Candidates Interested in admission competition procedures can find further information in the Admissions page.

Some of the scholarships offered are financed by the Ministry of Education, University and Research.  Non-fee paying studentships may be offered, and others may be financed by outside bodies. Foreign students should contact the Italian ambassador or consulate in their own countries, or their own Foreign Affairs Ministries, for more information on the opportunities to join Doctorate courses in Italy.

Students awarded with an ErasmusMundus, Marie-Curie or similar scholarships can apply in any period of the year. Send an email to the Coordinator for further instructions.
